If you haven’t seen or read anything about Flightline’s race at Del Mar on Sunday, you may have been somewhere in the world where the internet, television, newspapers and radio are not available! If you don’t believe me, Google Flightline Del Mar and see for yourself.

In what has been described as a “freakish” performance, Flightline followed up his April 12 13 1/4 length maiden breaking win with another race that was simply spectacular.

Facing winners for the first time, Flightline briefly rated behind the early speed and then accelerated as if he was in a race of his own. The final margin of victory was 12 3/4 lengths and the time for the 6F was 1:08:05. The time of the race was interesting in that it was only 2/5th’s of a second off the 6F track record at Del Mar which has stood for a long, long time (almost 50 years). More impressive than the time was the way he won. Jockey Flavien Prat never urged Flightline during the race, he was simply along for the ride.

It would have been hard to imagine Flightline running better in his second race than he did in his first race but he clearly did. Del Mar’s Race Caller Trevor Denman said, “we may be looking at racing’s next superstar” when Flightline cruised past the finish line. Regardless of how he is ultimately labeled, I’m looking forward to his next race.

While plans for Flightline’s next race have not been determined, trainer John Sadler has indicated his ultimate goal for the horse in 2021 is the Grade 1 Malibu Stakes at Santa Anita on December 26.
