While in New York City last week I had a chance to dine at The “21” Club. The “21” Club is a former prohibition-era speakeasy that dates back to the early 1900’s. Today, it is a wonderful restaurant, rich with history.

Before entering The “21” Club you are greeted by 33 cast iron lawn jockeys standing in attention on the steps of the restaurant. The tradition of the lawn jockeys dates back to the 1930’s. As a showing of appreciation, some of The “21” Club’s affluent regular customers donated a lawn jockey with the racing colors of their stable. Dogwood Stables, Zayat Stables, Elmendorf Farm, etc. are among the many stables represented. The newest addition to the lawn jockey collection is the Zayat Stables, the owners of this year’s Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah.

Earlier this Summer the lawn jockeys were completely refurbished by a commercial artist named Andrew Tedesco. Tedesco is a disciple of Leroy Neiman, the renowned equine artist. The next time you are in New York have a drink or dine at The “21” Club (21 West 52nd Street).

You won’t be disappointed!
