With the first month of the 2023 thoroughbred racing year completed, the racing industry just put a bow on 2022. Like the Grammy, Oscar or Tony Awards, thoroughbred racing has both the Longines and Eclipse Awards Programs.

The ceremony for the Longines Awards recently took place in London and Flightline won the award for World’s Best Racehorse. One week later, the Eclipse Awards ceremony took place at The Breakers Hotel in Palm Beach, FL. Flightline won the Eclipse Award for both Older Dirt Male Horse and Horse of the Year!

Flightline will shortly begin his “second career” as a stallion at Lane’s End Farm. He has settled in well at the farm and will be bred to between 150 and 165 mares this breeding season. While his offspring won’t begin racing until 2026, mare owners are not hesitating to pay Flightline’s $200,000 stud fee.

During January, we (Woodford Racing et al) had two winners. Patou Road got 2023 off to a great start with his win on January 4 at Gulfstream Park (Repole Stable, St. Elias Stable and Woodford Racing). Racing close to the early pace, Patou Road pulled away late to win by two lengths.

On January 21, Hawker broke his maiden at Santa Anita Racetrack sprinting 6 1/2 furlongs on the turf. In a gutsy performance, Hawker settled in along the rail off the early pacesetters and got up to win by a 1/2 length for (Hronis Racing LLC, West Point Thoroughbreds and Woodford Racing)!
