While there was no racing action in Saratoga on Monday, August 5 and Tuesday, August 6, there was another kind of action across the street from Saratoga Race Course. The 2019 Fasig-Tipton Select Yearlings Sale was conducted on Monday and Tuesday. Known as “The Saratoga Sale”, this year’s sale had 223 yearlings (one year old horses) that owners and trainers hoped would be their future Kentucky Derby or Kentucky Oaks Winner!
The sale included yearlings from proven sires as well as new sires such as Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah, Kentucky Derby Winners Nyquist and California Chrome and Preakness Winner Exaggerator.
As the sale was getting underway at 6:30 PM, the stock market had just suffered one of its worst performances in 2019. From the bidding that occurred all night you never would have known attendees were concerned about the performance of their investment portfolio!

The sale topper on Monday night was a colt named Flightline, by leading sire Tapit which sold for $1 million. We (Woodford Racing) were able to partner with West Point Thoroughbreds, Hronis Brothers and Flightline’s breeder Summer Wind Equine to acquire Flightline. The current thinking is he will be trained by John Sadler and based in California next year as a 2 year old.
On Tuesday night the sale topper was a colt by Curlin which sold for $1.5 million. We (Woodford Racing) partnered on this colt as well to purchase him. The partners are West Point Thoroughbreds and Siena Farm. He was bred by well known chef Bobby Flay. The colt will remain on the east coast to race next year.

As The Saratoga Sale concluded, every buyer left convinced they purchased a “winner” and began to dream about the future success of their horse(s). Woodford Racing had similar dreams! Let me know if you would like to buy in on these colts. Come on in, the water’s fine!
