The 142nd Running of the Kentucky Derby (May 7) is a little less than 90 days away and the Kentucky Derby Future Wager Pool #2 closed last Sunday. Similar to Pool #1, Pool #2 had 23 horses you could wager on by name or you could wager on All Other Three Year Old Horses if you believed the winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby was not amongst the 23 individually named horses.

Bettors believe the winner of this year’s Kentucky Derby is not one of the individually named horses in Pool #2 as reflected by the $7.20 payoff on a wager placed on All Other Three Year Olds.
In terms of individually named horses it is currently shaping up as an East versus West battle with Mohaymen (East) and Nyquist (West) both winning recent Derby Prep races. Mohaymen won the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park in Florida and Nyquist won the San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita Park in California. Both horses are being pointed to the Florida Derby on April 2 as their next race. If both run in the Florida Derby it will provide an interesting preview of the Kentucky Derby as both are currently undefeated.
Beyond Mohaymen and Nyquist, there are several horses amongst the 23 individually named horses worth a look. Among them are:
– Mor Spirit (recently won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes at Santa Anita and is trained by Bob Baffert, the trainer of last year’s Triple Crown Winner American Pharoah)
– Airoforce (won the Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes at Churchill Downs last Fall and obviously likes the track the Kentucky Derby will be run on)
– Whitmore (ran second to Suddenbreakingnews in the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park)
– Greenpointcrusader (won the Champagne Stakes at Belmont Park last Fall and ran second to Mohaymen in the Holy Bull Stakes at Gulfstream Park)
– Exaggerator (ran second to Nyquist in the San Vicente Stakes at Santa Anita Park)
– Mo Tom (recent winner of the Lecomte Stakes at Fairgrounds Racecourse in Louisiana who will race next in the Risen Star Stakes, a prep for the Louisiana Derby)
A horse not amongst the 23 named horses in Pool #2 is Suddenbreakingnews, the winner of the Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn Park earlier this week. Suddenbreakingnews will run next in the Rebel Stakes at Oaklawn Park, a prep to the Arkansas Derby.
The next 90 days should be interesting!
