“Where the turf meets the surf/Down at old Del Mar/Take a plane, take a train, take a car/There’s a smile on every face/And a winner in each race/Where the turf meets the surf at Del Mar”

Each day at Del Mar Racetrack fans hear this song made famous by Bing Crosby before the first race and after the last race. In addition, a “guest singer” performs the song after the sixth race.

Last weekend the “guest singer” was the entertainer Jewel as thoroughbred racing’s biggest stars were at Del Mar for the 33rd edition of the Breeder’s Cup World Championships. This year’s event (November 3 and 4) featured 12 races to determine the divisional champions of 2017. Purses for the 12 races totaled $28 million with individual race purses ranging from $1 million – $6 million!

Del Mar Racetrack hosted the Breeder’s Cup for the first time and attendees had to leave thoroughly impressed. The combination of beautiful weather, flawless service and first class racing allowed Del Mar to shine.

As the guest of Lanes End Farm, we had a chance to enjoy the races from an open air suite overlooking the finish line. While we (Woodford Racing) did not have any horses participate in the Breeders Cup, it was a wonderful experience.

The weekend was capped by Gun Runner easily winning the $6 million Breeders Cup Classic and laying claim to Horse of the Year honors.

I look forward to attending next year’s Breeders Cup event at Churchill Downs!
